Happy October!
October 1st, 2008 12:43 PM

Can you believe it's October already? That means only 31 days until Halloween. I'm not a big fan of the scary side of Halloween but one thing I do love is going to the pumpkin patch! It has become a tradition in our house for us all to go and pick out our own pumpkin. At first I thought it was just something to do but now I really look forward to it.

The boys love pulling the wagon, stomping through all the vines, commenting on the funny shapes of pumpkins and of course loading the wagon full with pumpkins! We usually get some cider or hot chocolate and some flowers and then off to carve pumpkins. This year I think we will try the corn maze!

There are several pumpkin patches in King and Snohomish County. Here is the link to Puget Sound Fresh, a directory of farmers markets and u-pick farms. Just choose your county, select pumpkins as a vegetable and search for the one closest to you. usually there is a website on each farm to give you more info. If you live in South Snohomish County Stoker Farms has a big Harvest Festival and their corn maze is open now.

Is That Email True?
October 14th, 2008 12:54 PM

Do you get a bunch of emails you have a feeling are false but you don't know how to prove it? I had a friend email me one of those and it involved the Government removing the words "In God We Trust" from a special presidential coin. There were pictures of the coin proving it was gone and the email strongly urged me to not use the coin.

First off, the words "In God We Trust" is on every piece of US currency. Don't you think if this really did happen the mainstream media would be all over it? So it got me to thinking it was a lie so I turned to my favorite resource snopes.com.

Snopes is a website that researches all these strange things to see if they are true or not. They have a really good search feature so I typed in "In God We Trust" and upcame the email my friend sent me. While it's true the term was removed from the face of the coin it is still on there, just on the side rim. Check out the story by clicking here.

Snopes is a great place to go and verify things. Plus it's fun to email the person back and say you know that email you forwarded to everyone in your address book, it's false! Yet another reason to encourage people not to SPAM me with forwards.
